How to find restaurant work in NYC without applying everywhere

The short answer: decide exactly what you want before you apply, then only go after places that match it. Sending the same application to every restaurant listing feels productive, but it mostly produces silence, trial shifts at places you would not take, and offers that do not fit your life.

1. Decide what you actually want
Write down four things: the role you want, where you can realistically work, when you can work, and the lowest pay you would accept. Our job search checklist walks through each one.
Being specific is not being picky. A clear target makes it easier to say yes quickly when the right thing shows up.
2. Narrow by location first
In NYC, commute time decides whether a job is sustainable. A place that is 40 minutes away at noon can be much longer after a midnight close. Pick the borough and areas you want, such as Brooklyn or Queens, and ignore listings outside them.
3. Go deep on a few places instead of wide on many
- Look at a restaurant's menu, hours and reviews before contacting them, so you know the pace and style.
- Walk in during a slow time, usually mid-afternoon, and ask for the manager or chef. Do not walk in during a rush.
- Ask people you have worked with. Restaurant hiring in NYC often happens through who you know.
4. Ask the questions that matter before a trial shift
- Is the trial or stage paid?
- How many shifts a week, and when is the schedule posted?
- How are tips shared, if the role is tipped?
- What time does the shift really end?
