NYC restaurant job search checklist: role, schedule, pay, location

Answer four questions before you apply anywhere: what role, what schedule, what minimum pay, and what location. If a job does not fit all four, it is probably not worth a trial shift.

Role
- Which role do you want most? Browse all roles if you are not sure.
- Which roles would you accept while working toward that one?
- What kind of place: casual, fine dining, bar, hotel, catering?
Schedule
- Which days can you work every week?
- Mornings, lunch, dinner, or late night?
- How many shifts a week do you want?
- Can you work doubles or holidays?
Pay
- What is the lowest hourly pay you would accept?
- If the role is tipped, ask how tips are shared rather than relying on estimates.
- Ask when pay gets reviewed.
Location
- Which borough: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx or Staten Island?
- Which areas inside that borough?
- How long does it take to get home when the shift ends?
Before you say yes
- Is the trial shift paid?
- When is the schedule posted?
- Who is your manager or chef?
